Development and conservation of Philippine Mangroves: institutional issues – This paper by Dr. Jurgenne Primavera deals with the institutional issues (aquaculture as development strategy, low economic rent of mangroves, overlapping bureaucracy and conflicting policies, corruption, weak law enforcement, and lack of political will) relevant to the decline of Philippine mangroves. [PDF – File Size: 1.70 MB]
Mangrove-friendly Aquaculture - This book documents the proceedings of the first workshop on mangrove-friendly aquaculture organized by SEAFDEC/AQD in January 1999.
Conserving our mangrove resources - 12 minutes; describes the plight of mangroves in the wake of the fishpond boom and efforts to sustain the mangroves.
Diel activity patterns for Metapenaeus and Penaeus juveniles – This paper by Dr. Jurgenne Primavera and Junemie Lebata shows the importance of mangrove habitats in providing shelter to penaeids, in particular to the mangrove associated P. monodon and P. merguiensis. [PDF – File Size: 1.10 MB]
Size and diel differences in activity patterns of Metapenaeus ensis, Penaeus latisultacus, and P. merguiensis – This paper by Dr. Jurgenne Primavera and Junemie Lebata documents the shelter use and other activities in mangrove-associated penaeids, and diel and size differences relating to these activities. [PDF – File Size: 1.43 MB]
Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of penaeid juveniles and primary producers in riverine mangrove in Guimaras, Philippines – This paper by Dr. Jurgenne Primavera explains primary food sources of penaeid juveniles, determined using stable isotope technique. [PDF File Size: 13.0 MB]
Mangroves as nurseries: shrimp populations in mangrove and non-mangrove habitats – This paper by Dr. Jurgenne Primavera discusses the abundance, species, and size composition of penaeid populations in mangrove, and non-mangrove habitats. [PDF – File Size: 813 KB]
Fish predation on mangrove-associated penaeids: the role of structures and substrate – This paper by Dr. Jurgenne Primavera shows the effect of habitat structure and substratum on predation of Metapenaeus ensis, Penaeus merguiensis, and P. monodon. [PDF – File size: 1.39 MB]
Tropical shrimp farming and its sustainability – This chapter by Dr. Jurgenne Primavera describes shrimp farming, discusses it ecological and socioeconomic impacts and recommends measures to achieve long-term sustainability. [PDF – File Size: 2.88MB]
State-of-the-Art Series: Environment-friendly schemes in intensive shrimp farming - A 25-page manual detailing the procedures of intensive shrimp farming but with provisos for the treatment of sludge and water. These provisos include (1) the use of water reservoir where pond water is stored for at least a week before being used in the grow-out ponds, (2) the use of "tail" pond to hold drained water so it can be treated and recycled, (3) the use of long-arm paddle wheel so water aeration-circulation is made more efficient, and (4) the use of fishes to help condition the water and substantially produce green water.
State-of-the-Art Series: Closed-recirculating shrimp farming systems - A 27-page manual detailing the procedures of intensive shrimp farming through a closed culture system. By minimizing and even avoiding altogether the discharge of organic matter and nutrients from the grow-out into the natural water, the adverse environmental impact often associated with intensive shrimp farming is avoided. This system also features treatment pond where waste water is treated first before it is returned to the grow-out ponds.
